In hindsight, it represents the best of times and the worst of times for the artist. To elaborate, we must rewind to a crucial turning point: the early 1990s.
Or to put it another way: as his skin became whiter, his work became blacker. For a figure as enigmatic as Michael Jackson, one of the more fascinating paradoxes about his career is this: as he became whiter, he became blacker. You know – I’ve got to get that man, that man… (You gotta get it right, while you got the time) (Take a look at yourself and then make the change) (Take a look at yourself and then make that…) Take a look at yourself and then make that… (Take a look at yourself and then make a change) Take a look at yourself and then make a change They follow the pattern on the wind, ya’ see That there are some with no home, not a nickelĬould it be really me, pretending that they’reĪ willow deeply scarred, somebody’s broken heart I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love (Take a look at yourself, and then make a change) Take a look at yourself, and then make a change (If you wanna make the world a better place) If you wanna make the world a better place They follow each other on the wind ya’ knowĪnd no message could have been any clearer Who am I, to be blind? Pretending not to see their needsĪ summer’s disregard, a broken bottle top I see the kids in the street, with not enough to eat It’s gonna feel real good, gonna make a differenceĪs I turn up the collar on my favorite winter coat I’m gonna make a change, for once in my life I connect to the poem/song because I’ve been down many times in my life after horrible events and I felt alone. The narrator is Michael Jackson, he is speaking to himself and kinda to others too. Its an important event In his life that he’s finally changing his old ways of thinking and being. I don’t think it was for a particular person, its just him wanting change. The poem/ song is mainly for himself but others are involved in it also. He wants to be a better person and the message is just look at yourself in the mirror and decide for yourself to be a better you. He wants to make a change in his life and others.
There’s not much punctuation because it’s a song, the writer uses these devices and forms because people like to listen to music. There’s not many but there is a few stanza lines. I think this song is a narrative poem/song. The writer chose this tone and feeling in the poem/song because it’s a deep and meaningful song. “make the world into a better place” he wanted to be a better person for himself but for the world to be a better place. For me this song means a lot because I’ve wanted to change things that I didn’t like about myself and I connect by him looking in the mirror and realizing that he needs that change. “Difference” he wanted to make a difference in other peoples lives. It was happy in a way because he wanted to change for himself to be happy, it was also sad because he had to deal with the battle of change and often change is not easy. In my opinion it was sad, thoughtful that he decided to need a change. “It’s time to realize” It gave an interesting feeling because it was time for him to realize that he needed a change. “Change” because the whole song is based on Michael Jackson wanting to change his ways on life and himself. The effects it has is that he wants to change into a better person. Michael Jackson chose these words because he wanted to make a change in his life and to help others.
Some vivid language I found was “disregard” and “willow”. I couldn’t find any similies in the song. The metaphor is Michael Jackson comparing himself to the mirror, especially him being the man in the mirror. “Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!” It repeats 5 times. “I see the kids in the street, with not enough to eat.” It reminds me of all the times I see homeless people on the streets and wishing I could make a change in their life by getting them into a better place. This song is a really powerful and strong.
The reason I chose “the man in the mirror” by Michael Jackson is because I connect to it in many ways. This is the song that i chose for my analysis.
